The nuts and bolts of my “one thought” philosophy to becoming a single digit golfer begins with a change of terminology. We will redefine the universally held terms in golf – the “mental” game and the “physical” game – and refer to these moving forward as the “thinking” game and the “action” game.

We will turn unconscious thinking into conscious real positive thoughts that allow you to gain confidence throughout the process of dropping strokes. I will give you an example of what I mean.

As I approach a shot I will think and actually talk to myself out loud—I want to hear what is actually going on in the thinking process approaching a shot. For example, let’s say I am in the middle of the fairway with no wind blowing, and I pick the club that suits the shot. Then I engage the “one thought” process. I think of only one thing over the ball. In this instance, I think “smooth” and actually say it out loud. The action of swinging and connecting with the ball is combined with the thought “smooth”. I have eliminated all the “stuff” from the execution of the shot and have allowed a natural process to take over.

This is how we connect the two elements (thinking and action) and simplify the game forever.

I am always thinking for success. I want to remember my best shots, my best rounds and every time I play I take that with me to the course. I literally “think” I am going to play well. I have an internal smile on my face every time I am on the first tee. You will too from now on. You possess the power.

You must understand that golf at the single digit level is an athletic event not just a recreational activity. You are an athletic golfer and this simply must be part of your new mindset. I am not trying to get you to run the 4 minute mile or pole vault 18 feet or throw a fast ball 95 miles per hour but rather you must prepare athletically not recreationally. This is a part of the process that starts before you ever reach the first tee.

Contrary to most golfers, I do not go to the range to warm-up before a round. But I am very prepared athletically from the action side. I make sure that I have blood flowing to the necessary parts of the body. I stretch my legs and arms. I rub my hands and make certain that I get blood flowing in my fingers. I do swing several clubs as many times as it takes to feel comfortable that the blood is flowing and I am then ready for the first shot of the day to go right down the middle!

On the thinking side, whenever I’m headed to the golf course, before I get in the car and all the way on the drive, I consciously prepare that I am going to play great that day–every time, every round- I am pre-programmed for thinking and action success.

Athletes prepare to succeed you are now an athlete. I actually tell myself what I am going to work on today from the very first shot. I might say something like “stand close to the ball, play the ball more off your front foot on the first drive and swing smooth all day long.” You may say something entirely different but it must be believable to you because you know you cannot lie to yourself. It may not be the same thought each time but it’s my consistent practice and gets my thinking solid right off the first tee.

Play with it, have fun with it, its going to be a part of your game from this day forward. I smile when I do it because I know I am going to play well every time on the course without exception! Say it out loud!!!!! You possess the power.
